Our Mission

Changing perspectives on mobile phone use at mealtimes

To pause from screens to inspire joy and community and remind us of all of the power human connection during mealtimes. Across all cultures, sharing food has always been a part of human experiences linking us all together.

US Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek H. Murthy’s “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation 2023” is a public statement and advisory on the health implications of social isolation. Science shows that poor or insufficient social connection is associated with increased risk of disease, including a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% risk of stroke.  It is also associated with increased risk for anxiety, depression and dementia and may increase the susceptibility to virus and respiratory illness. According to the Surgeon General, “frequent phone use, especially during face-to-face interactions between parents and children, and between family and friends, increased distraction, reduced conversation quality, and lowered self-reported enjoyment of time spent together in-person.”

The #FoodNotPhones initiative is a reminder to put down the phones during mealtimes and enjoy and reconnect with family, friends and those around the table.
